“You cannot be socially aware if you are not self-aware..."

Much of NewRoot’s work begins with how adults show up. Not with a script, but with awareness, intention, and care.

We sat down with James Wright (he/him), NewRoot Impact Coach, to reflect on how restorative and social-emotional practices take root over time.

For James, this work isn’t just professional, it’s personal. Raised on Chicago’s South Side and shaped by years working alongside young people in schools and community spaces, he came to restorative practice out of a desire to respond differently and more thoughtfully.

"Learning about self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, and relationship building helped me process my own world.”

Self-awareness sits at the center of his approach. James described how restorative and SEL practices helped him slow down, recognize his own reactions, and respond with intention. Over time, those practices stopped feeling like tools and became habits, shaping how he navigates conflict, builds relationships, and supports young people.

James also reflected on the preventative nature of this work. When adults are grounded and aligned, conflict is less likely to escalate. When relationships and community are strong, people will fight harder to stay connected and engaged.

"A lot of the harm gets overlooked, but that's because the systems and structures are doing what it is meant to do."
